Footprints Project Community Hub

It was so much fun working on this commission for a new community hub! Footprints Project is a not-for-profit organisation bringing a sense of community, hope and increased self-worth to socially excluded people, reducing reoffending and building stronger communities.

Their community hub has space for workshops, a cafe, garden activities, IT training and lots more - it was a brilliant challenge to come up with two illustrations that showed all these activities.

Process

After a briefing meeting with the client, my illustration process starts with research and sketching roughs, which I share by email. We agree on options and any changes or preferences the client would like. For this piece, I worked from photographs of the space and used illustration to visualise different uses, before moving on to linework.

I draw the linework by hand using my favourite Unipin fineliner. I scan this in and clean up in Photoshop, sometimes adjusting the layout too. I love to keep the detail and irregularities of the hand-drawn line, so I don’t polish it too much. I bring this into Illustrator where I add colour and experiment with the palette. The illustrations feature characters in a simplified style, with a warm colour palette that reflects the client’s brand.

The final outcome for the client was an eflyer including details of the Hub and a call out for group collaborations, which I designed in addition to the illustrations.
