Single Parent Rights Campaign
I was so happy to illustrate this series highlighting achievements and key statistics for the awesome Single Parent Rights Campaign. The campaign is calling on the UK government to add single parents as a protected characteristic to the Equality Act.
The illustrations feature simplified figures representing campaigners and single parents, in big moments like the first campaign success in 2020.
Look closely at the 80% illustration and you’ll see some examples of the types of discrimination that 80% of single parents face.
Single Parent Rights’ founder and director Ruth is so insightful and energised so it was a privilege to work on these.
And as a single parent I can see how much difference it would make to mine and others’ lives if we were part of the Equality Act - we face discrimination in housing, employment, and access to services to name just a few areas. Thanks so much to Ruth and the Single Parent Rights team for this lovely brief.
Process
My illustration process starts with research and sketching roughs, which I share with my client. We agree on options and any changes or preferences the client would like. For infographics like the 80% piece, I try out different ways of representing the data before moving on to linework.
I draw the linework by hand using my favourite Unipin fineliner. I scan this in and clean up in Photoshop, sometimes adjusting the layout too. I love to keep the detail and irregularities of the hand-drawn line, so I don’t polish it too much. I bring this into Illustrator where I add colour and experiment with the palette. The bright colour palette against the campaign’s green background makes these pieces really impactful.
These illustrations feature on the Single Parent Rights website (link below).
“Rachel was brilliant to work with. Not only were the final products exceptional, the whole process was seamless. Rachel outlined the process and timeframes from the start and stuck to them throughout. She gave guided questions to help with feedback to ensure we were able to end up with the perfect illustrations for our website. We would have no hesitation in recommending Rachel to others or in using her again.”
